6th September 2008 started out as a rather normal sabbath morning with routine and worship. From teens class, to the youth classes to the divine hour where Elder Atinga, the Head Elder of Nairobi Central, gave a deep and wonderful sermon titled 'The Scandal of Our Times'. For the first time in a long time, Edwin had not mentally wandered off into the wilderness and I had not conveniently dozed off, though Joseph was far from the point of concentration and Ronnie wasn't writing the usual sermon notes he did. With Jamo and Ted out of the radar it was rather difficult to establish whether or not they had been concentrating...it was not however difficult to see George dozing off, rather predictably. If one of the in-Tuners should be screened for the exotic disease of sleeping sickness...especially during the sermon, then I highly recommend him!(No offense Georgie), that is of course alongside food addiction for Bernard and Jona, women for Anderson and to a lesser extent Joseph and finally 'scariness' for Ted...I'll leave you to ponder on that one reader...
Afternoon lunch was an amicable affair...Joseph, Tichy, Anderson, my mother and myself had a scrumptuous meal right by the church as the rest had their families to dine with. This rapidly progressed and concluded in a lengthly conversation about everything from the air to politics, after which time came for us to head to the Music Room for our practice. We had a task ahead seeing as such that the Youth Trip to Kathiani was fast headed our way and we had to work on our new songs.
After some light voice practice, a few jokes and warm ups, we went into serious practice for what would be around fifteen minutes after which we were called by the Pangani Eder for our trip there with our brother group AMO Junior. The transport arrangements were speedily taken care of, and our entourage of five vehicles weeded its way out of Nairobi Central at exactly three pm, which was very late. Approximately half an hour later we made our way into the School which is situated in the Eastlands area of Nairobi, right next to Starehe School.
As was expected, we received a warm welcome from the students who were quick to usher us in and soon the afternoon programme was well underway. We had about an hour to be done with our presentations and AMO Junior set the ball rolling for us with an item titled 'John the Revelator'. You should hear their bass, Davie, at his best. Annointed also made an appearance as did Craig's friend Kevin (not me) who performed a solo act which gripped the congregation with its reflective influence. This was followed by an item of music from In-Tune and then inter-changes which culminated in one huge collaboration with the brother group in the song 'Abba Father'.
Little did we know that this would indeed set the precedence for many more collaborations with AMO Junior to come. At around 5.00pm in the evening, it was time to leave the school and coincidentally, we all headed back to church, where a practice session come sing-spiration followed where both the groups decided to sing through most of the Acappella Company songs. The melodies filled the air around till late 7.00pm, where darkness rather than willingness persuaded us to depart for home. We ended up singing our way to the city centre where we parted ways and each of us headed home for the night.
